Our Story

The creamy story behind world's best dog ice cream

Or how a crazy idea turned out to a worldwide bestseller!

Our story begins in the summer of 2014 when our founder Sonja Cattani's litte master of the two short-haired dachshunds, Hugo and Celine, was asked if she could come up with a new flavour of children's ice cream for a large ice cream manufacturer. If she came up with a truly unique flavour, the ice cream maker would do a trial launch. She came up with a series of intricate flavours but eventually lost interest and exclaimed that there are already too many flavours for kids so why not make ice cream for dogs? The manufacturer wasn't that hooked on the idea, perhaps because he wasn't too much of a dog person. But we couldn't let go of the brilliant idea and in the summer of 2015 Hugo & Celine, ice cream for dogs, was launched in selected restaurants and cafes in Stockholm and surrounding area!

Since the start, with trial-production from Sonja's own test kitchen, the production has moved into our own well-suited factory. Our market has expanded from Stockholm and surrounding area to an international sales success. Around the Nordic countries dogs howl with excitement when our court supplier's, Hemglass, truck pass by the neighbourhood with it's signature tune. And iIn line with the expansion, the range has expanded with an on line of dog snacks and dog's fur care.

Our muses Hugo and Celine have not only inspired to a perfect recipe and adorn our packaging and menus, but have also helped us build an empire of natural healthy Swedish-made dog snacks for dogs all over the world!

Dog treats and dog ice cream from our own factories

We produce all treats in our own Swedish factory. It started out with our production of ice cream for dogs in the old historic Carlshamns Dairy in Karlshamn 2017. In 2020 we extended with an factory in Landskrona for our own line of dog treats. From today, 2024, we have our own brand new facility in Skara, Sweden.

We prepare our products from Swedish premium raw materials without any use of "bad" additives (such as additives for taste, color and preservation). The products are then packaged in our award-winning packaging, and distributed worldwide to all Hugo&Celine loving stores, cafés, hotels and restaurants!

Sustainable Work

Work in progress

Excellent ingredients!

Nothing goes to waste! We work with the best of Swedish raw materials and close to the big Swedish slaughterhouses to take care of the "whole animal" in a sustainable fashion. This is supplemented with fine Swedish game.

Swedish meat

  • is free from hormones and antibiotics

  • Swedish animals are prosperous and part of a sustainable process

  • Sweden has high quality and safe food that is produced with good animal care and environmental considerations

Swedish game

Free-living wild animals such as elk, deer, deer and wild boar are set to zero greenhouse gas emissions (despite the animal's rumination and methane emissions), as they would exist even without hunting. Therefore, only greenhouse gas emissions from slaughter, cutting and other things in connection with hunting and slaughter are counted. Game therefore has a lower climate impact per kilogram than, for example, beef and lamb. Support-fed game has a somewhat greater climate impact (per kilogram of meat) compared to other free-living game. However, compared to animals raised in agriculture, no additional farmland or feed is used for wild game. Hence a more sustainable choice.

Transport

Through our work with Swedish raw materials, transport is minimal and results in a lower climate impact through shorter transports within Sweden. We work continuously for transport optimization, both in cartons and through optimization of goods deliveries - the goal is full cars and no air in the pallets!

Production

We work continuously with energy efficiency both in freezer handling and in the drying process. We produce all our products in our own factory.

  • we are ISO 9001 Certified

  • we have full control over raw materials and production

  • we have many years of experience

  • we manufacture our products under gentle low-temperature drying with air and heat
